Avoid Burnout with These 3 Tips

 

Burnout is a real and quite damaging condition. Once you find yourself suffering from burnout, it can be difficult to turn your life around. This is why it is necessary to take steps to try and avoid burnout.

 

  1. Set Boundaries

 

No matter what your profession may be, it’s important to have boundaries. You can’t be available around the clock; this is simply impossible. So, to prevent burnout, it’s critical to establish boundaries of times you will not be available. This means that you won't be in the office or available by phone or email during these times. If you are in a management position, it might help to post these hours somewhere or adjust your email auto-reply, so people know you will answer as soon as you are available.

Strong Boundaries Promote Healthy Intimacy

I receive a slew of questions about personal boundaries. So, I decided to put together a few resources in the next few emails to answer the questions that I think many have but may not have the opportunity to have answered in a therapy or coaching session. 

 

Over the years, I have noticed that people share boundary issues in a way that suggests adopting a tough vibe. From there come the questions, “Would saying no to someone result in something terrible happening?” “Would it make someone swear me off as a friend?” “Will I be single forever?”

 

On an intellectual level we understand that setting boundaries reflects self-respect. To take that knowledge a step further, there is research that supports the idea that practicing setting personal boundaries builds self-esteem. The difficulty comes when it’s real life and our understanding is complicated by uncomfortable emotions.

Saying "no" to something in order to say "yes" to your own emotional, physical, and mental well-being.

Here’s a little reminder that we ALL need to hear every once in a while (myself very much included!):
 
As you contemplate your life that was and your life that can be, remember that underneath any fear that you may feel is a rich storehouse of strength, potential, and talent. The trauma that occurs with divorce may interfere with your ability to feel confident and capable, wise and knowing, but your riches are there nonetheless. As you begin to make some changes, no matter how small they may seem compared to the size of your dreams, an increased sense of confidence will follow. It will grow and expand as your transformation unfolds. There is no end to what you can accomplish. Karen Wilson
