How do I know if I have experienced trauma?

Healing from trauma is not about erasing the past, it’s about transforming the way it lives within you. It’s about recognizing that while trauma may have shaped your experiences, it does not define you. You are capable of growth, of rewriting your story, and of stepping into a life that is filled with love, connection, and possibility.

One of the most common questions I am asked is:

How do I know if I have trauma?

Many people believe trauma is something that only happens in extreme circumstances: war, stranger or family violence, automobile accidents, or major losses. These more extreme circumstances are objectively traumatic. However, an event need not be objectively traumatic or extreme to have been traumatic.

Whether an event is traumatic for us is related to both whether the event is objectively traumatic and whether the event was subjectively traumatic.

When determining whether clients who have experienced major negative life events have expe...

Your Self-Awareness Journey

A psychoanalytic investigation is a complex and nuanced journey into one's delicate heart.-Galit Atlas, PhD

One reason people come to therapy is to get to know the truth of who they are. A next step is to live from that truth on a daily basis, not only during extraordinary circumstances.

4 Questions to Ask Yourself As You Begin

Your Self-Awareness Journey

How do I handle strong emotions?

Our body signals similar sensations for both anticipation and anxiety, as well as passion and frustration. However, our mindset plays a crucial role in determining how we respond to these sensations. We have the power to generate momentum for positive change or get caught up in a mental loop. It all depends on how we choose to respond.

Stress arises from many different kinds of situations, both good and bad life events and transitions trigger stress. We can learn a lot about ourselves from looking more ...

Saying "no" to something in order to say "yes" to your own emotional, physical, and mental well-being.

Here’s a little reminder that we ALL need to hear every once in a while (myself very much included!):

As you contemplate your life that was and your life that can be, remember that underneath any fear that you may feel is a rich storehouse of strength, potential, and talent. The trauma that occurs with divorce may interfere with your ability to feel confident and capable, wise and knowing, but your riches are there nonetheless. As you begin to make some changes, no matter how small they may seem compared to the size of your dreams, an increased sense of confidence will follow. It will grow and expand as your transformation unfolds. There is no end to what you can accomplish. Karen Wilson

Listen, my friend: life is short.

That’s why we need to let go of never having time to do anything for ourselves and focus on the heart ❤️of self-care, which is saying no to something in order to say yes to your own emotional, physical, and mental well-being instead.

How About A Toxic Thinking Wipe Out?

It's the New Year.  Many of the changes in 2021 will come from external factors, i.e. a vaccine, weather conditions, the economy  etc..

However, the most potent changes will come from changes in our thinking.

A change you cultivate within will make extraordinary, awesome, and welcome change in your life.  It will also influence positive change in the lives of others.

How many times have you been told:

PREPARE FOR THE WORST.

As if preparing for the worst will keep the worst from happening.

Our mental playlists are loaded with stories predicting worst case scenarios.  We believe that telling ourselves these stories will protect us.

We must come to know that by visualizing and preparing for the worst, we predict and perpetuate the worst actually happening. We plant toxic seeds for failing to fulfill our dreams.

Why do we plant the seeds of toxic thoughts again and again and make it harder for ourselves to accomplish our goals?

Each person's playli...
